A new study titled “Loading the Sleigh: Marketers’ Plans & Expectations for the Holiday Season” by Retail Systems Research found that retailers are spending a lot more on web marketing this holiday season compared to previous years.
The survey polled 179 retailers in the months of August and September 2012.
Over 20 per cent of retailers surveyed said they will “significantly” increase spending on social media, mobile and e-mail marketing this holiday season, allocating over 50 per cent of their holiday marketing budget to those media.
Sixty-seven per cent of those surveyed expected an increase in online holiday sales in 2012 as a result of their marketing campaigns and overall trends in online shopping.

However, what the study didn’t seem to mention was how retailers felt about paid search. You can spend a lot on web marketing, but if your marketing efforts points to a site that’s hard for shoppers to read while they surf the web on their mobile, then you are missing out on potential sales,” said Mr. Nguyen.
