Individuals who can’t continue working must deal with their disease as well as the emotional, psychological and financial impacts of not being able to work
Belleville, IL (PRWEB) February 07, 2013
Almost 1.5 million people in the United States experience significant tissue damage, organ failure, disability and death due to lupus. Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance(SSDI) representation and Medicare plan selection services, is pleased to support the Lupus Foundation of America’s Help Us Solve the Cruel Mystery™ national tour focused on this urgent national public health issue.
According to the Lupus Foundation of America, lupus is more pervasive and more severe than people realize. The chronic autoimmune disease can strike without warning, ravage different parts of the body and can be debilitating, destructive—even fatal.
Allsup helps individuals with lupus who can no longer work obtain the SSDI benefits they paid for during their working years. However, because of a lack of understanding and awareness of the disease, as well as the subjective nature of some of its painful symptoms, many individuals with lupus are denied benefits. According to the 2011 National Burden of Lupus Survey:
- Three-fourths of all people with lupus (74 percent) agreed that having lupus is a financial burden.
- 67 percent of people with lupus report reducing the number of hours worked.
- 63 percent quit working or retired earlier than planned.
“Working with individuals with lupus, we see first-hand the challenges they face in everything from getting a diagnosis to communicating the severity of how lupus affects them,” said Tai Venuti, Allsup’s manager of Strategic Alliances. “Individuals who can’t continue working must deal with their disease as well as the emotional, psychological and financial impacts of not being able to work.
“The more we all know about lupus, the better we can rise to the challenge of providing appropriate and compassionate advocacy, care and services,” Venuti added. “That’s why Allsup is pleased to support the Lupus Foundation of America’s innovative cross-country educational program.”
Help Us Solve the Cruel Mystery™ is visiting communities across the nation to educate lupus patients, their families and their healthcare professionals, raise public awareness of lupus, and to urge Congress to increase support for lupus medical research.
The tour includes a 45-foot purple bus covered in lupus facts, featuring interactive exhibits that help visitors learn about lupus through the experiences of people with the disease. It also includes an education program for lupus patients and their families and a state-of-the-science continuing medical education (CME) program for healthcare professionals. Healthcare providers can register for the CME program by clicking here. Lupus patients and their families can register for the free educational program by clicking here.
Allsup experts will be on site at the educational programs to answer SSDI and Medicare-related questions and provide free disability evaluations. A complete list of bus tour dates and locations is available at CruelMystery.com.
