The insurers of Rowan Atkinson’s McLaren F1 have had to pay £910,000 in repairs after the actor crashed it for the second time in 2011, as reported in The Independent.
The car spent over a year in the hands of McLaren expert technicians in Surrey, after it crashed when it hit a slippery patch of road near Peterborough in August 2011, leaving the car’s 6.1 engine 20 yards away from the car.
The repair bill is three times the original record of £300,000, paid by Aviva to fix a crashed Pagnai Zanda in 2010.
Rowan Atkinson originally paid £640,000 for the car back in 1997, but the price of the car has rapidly increased over recent years as it become one of the most sought after modern cars, with just 64 road going F1s. One car in perfect condition sold for £3.5 million last year.
A spokesperson for Cost.co.uk said:
“This insurance claim is pretty substantial and it’s unsurprising that it’s managed to notch up the record of the most expensive insurance claim in British history. We hope Mr Atkinson did his research to compare car insurance quotes from various providers so he could get the best insurance deal for his McLaren F1.”
