The North Carolina High School Mock Trial competition provides an opportunity for North Carolina students to learn about the justice system and legal process. In preparing for the competition, students learn about a specific legal issue and the manner in which the legal issue is presented to judges and jurors. Students apply public speaking, analytical skills and leadership in a courtroom setting. Most students describe the experience as helping them develop skills that will serve them well in any career they pursue, as well as develop confidence. The mock trial competition began 20 years ago in Raleigh, but has since developed into a competition that spans over eight regions and consists of around 70 teams.

This year’s competition will be held at the Orange County Courthouse in nearby Hillsborough, NC in light of the current physical move of the Durham County Courthouse in Durham.

Approximately eight teams will participate in the competition on Saturday in which local volunteer attorneys serve as judges and jurors. Team registration begins at 8:45 a.m., and the final round of the competition will begin at 4:15 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow at 6 p.m.

“The mock trial competition is a great way for North Carolina’s young adults to get exposure to the justice system, as well as develop analytical thinking and team play.” said Attorney Tara Williams, a shareholder and the head of the firm’s social service committee. “It is very rewarding to see students work so hard and grow in their confidence and aspirations. We are happy to contribute to the process in this way.”
