On February 13, 2013, Linus Bike, a commuter bike manufacturer, offered its support for a petition proposed by Kibworth, England local Mike Higgins to include cycle awareness as part of the driving exam.
In a recent report from Harborough Mail, Mike Higgins, a cyclist from Kibworth, created a petition to include cycle awareness as part of the driving exam. The article states that Higgins believes that knowledge regarding cyclists on the roads must be improved and that the best way to remedy it is to begin training drivers on cyclist awareness.
The article reports that within less than a week Higgins has gathered over 5,500 signatures. In addition, the petition is being supported by cycling legend Chris Boardman and British Cycling.
“I’m not trying to say all cyclists are good and all drivers bad. I do feel that it is a lottery at the moment. Some people know how to overtake, some don’t,” Higgins states in the article.
According to the article, the death of a Kibworth man named Adam Bennett has partly prompted the petition. Bennett passed away in November following a collision on Bruntingthorpe Road. “This year UK drivers have knocked too many people off bikes including Bradley Wiggins,” Higgins explains.
“With London 2012 and Wiggo’s win at the Tour De France, more people will be on the road, so awareness will be more important.” Higgins continues, “The other day it just hit me that perhaps people just need to be trained in how and when to overtake. They do it for horses!”
The Harbourough Mail reports that Higgins is hopeful to invoke a debate in Parliament after obtaining the required 100,000 petition signatures. “100,000 is a lot of signatures but I think once I get some momentum the story can build and it’s good to start locally,” says Higgins.
“The determination of one man who wants to change the world is inspiring,” comments China Reevers, a representative of commuter bike manufacturer Linus Bike. “Linus Bike supports the cycling community and outwardly speaks on behalf of road safety everywhere. We offer our support for Mr. Higgins’ petition and look forward to this change in legislature.”
