Ari Nowain, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist in Beverly Hills, CA, announced today that he provides an enhancement to standard colonoscopy, the current gold standard in the detection and removal of pre-cancerous polyps. The revolutionary procedure, called a Third Eye® colonoscopy, can dramatically improve the detection and removal of pre-cancerous colon polyps, compared to standard colonoscopy.
Third Eye® colonoscopy uses an additional tiny camera that is inserted into the colonoscope, which allows the physician to not only see directly ahead in the colon, but also behind the many folds and turns in the colon lining. Once the standard colonoscope reaches the end of the colon, the physician can insert the second small camera, the Third Eye® Retroscope device, which provides a retrograde (“backward”) view of the colon wall.

Published medical research shows that up to 24 percent of pre-cancerous polyps can be missed during a standard colonoscopy, including nearly 12 percent of the large, most clinically significant ones. Additionally, published medical research shows that 2/3 of missed pre-cancerous polyps were hidden on the backside of folds within the lining of the colon.
In many cases, colon polyps do not cause any noticeable symptoms for the patient. This makes the accurate detection of polyps during colon screening even more critical. Multiple studies have shown that the Third Eye® device provides an improved rate of detection for pre-cancerous polyps. Most recently, a large study from multiple clinics showed that Third Eye® colonoscopy increased the detection of precancerous polyps by 23 percent over standard colonoscopy. In patients with a greater risk of colorectal cancer, those with a history of lesions in the colon and those who had signs or symptoms such as blood in the stool, the study showed Third Eye® colonoscopy increased detection of pre-cancerous polyps by over 40 percent.
Preparation, recovery, and risks associated with a Third Eye® colonoscopy are the same as for a standard colonoscopy procedure.
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, with approximately 150,000 new cases occurring annually. The standard screening procedure, called a colonoscopy, uses a flexible, camera-equipped colonoscope to see inside the colon and detect polyps. Polyps are abnormal growths of tissue in the colon lining which have the potential to develop into colorectal cancer.
Doctors recommend having your first colonoscopy performed around the age of 50, 45 for African Americans and earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer. Patients who are at high risk for colorectal cancer or who wish to be extra safe in their screening are good candidates for Third Eye® colonoscopy.
