San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2013
All upper deck lanes on the Bay Bridge were closed Friday morning, after a motorcyclist heading westbound was injured in a crash, according to CBS San Francisco. A California Highway Patrol spokesman told CBS that the crash was reported at 6:30 a.m., near the on-ramp to Treasure Island. No other motorists were injured.
According to CHP Officer James Evans said, and as reported by CBS, the accident reportedly occurred when a drive shaft detached from a big rig and fell onto the roadway, directly in the path of a motorcyclist. The cyclist came into contact with the drive shaft and was thrown from the motorcycle. The cyclist suffered only minor injuries.
The accident blocked three middle lanes on the upper deck of the bridge, which was backed up until 7:12 a.m, when the lanes were once again cleared. The San Jose Mercury News further reports that traffic was moving again by about 7:20 a.m.
“If [a detached drive shaft] is confirmed to be the cause of the crash, the big rig driver—or the company responsible for maintaining the big rig—may face legal liability for the accident. Fortunately there were no serious injuries, but the outcome could have been much worse, and trucking companies are responsible for ensuring that all of their commercial vehicles are highway-safe.
Nadrich also offered some highway safety tips for cyclists. “Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, obey all speed limits, pay close attention to your surroundings, and never hit the road without wearing a full-face helmet. If you don’t have much practice with emergency braking and steering, find a vacant location and master this essential skill right away. You never know when you’re going to need it.”
