Entrepreneurs such as Magpie Sensing are important to Maryland’s commercial development, and TEDCO is proud to award them $75,000 through the Technology Commercialization Fund

Today, Magpie Sensing, a healthcare analytics company, announced it received $75,000 from the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) to bring its innovative cold chain analytics system to market. Magpie Sensing is an Emerging Technology Centers startup based in Baltimore, Maryland.

“Entrepreneurs such as Magpie Sensing are important to Maryland’s commercial development, and TEDCO is proud to award them $75,000 through the Technology Commercialization Fund – formerly the Maryland Technology Transfer and Commercialization Fund,” said Rob Rosenbaum, president and executive director of TEDCO. “We look forward to watching the company bring its system to market and tracking its future growth.”

The funding will enable Magpie Sensing to continue testing its technology with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The Department manages the Vaccines for Children program, in which Medicaid enrolled providers receive subsidized vaccines. These tests will allow Magpie Sensing to bring its technology to market in 2013.

Magpie Sensing is currently in use at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Center for Epigenetics, University of Maryland, and Passport Health. Since August 2012, Magpie Sensing has provided continuous monitoring data on cold storage units for their test sites.

In the words of Dr. Karen Reddy of the Center for Epigenetics, “We have been pleased with the Magpie system’s analytics, and the pre-emptive alerts the system sends to our team. These alerts have helped our team to spot and correct developing problems before temperatures reached critical points. We believe the continuous real-time monitoring provided by this system is superior to and more cost effective than other monitoring systems on the market.”

According to Tom Smith, CEO of Magpie Sensing, “DHMH is a thought leader in the field of vaccine monitoring and regulation. We are thrilled to be working with the Department on these tests and to have the support of TEDCO.”
