The WHO's 2009 report found there was a direct link between the mold and mildew that results from indoor dampness and the aggravation of some forms of asthma and other upper respiratory conditions.

Mold and mildew are both fungi that grow in moist environments, and indoors, mold and mildew are most commonly found in a home's bathroom or in a moist, dark basement.

A spokesperson for The Shower Doctor, the UK's largest online retailer of showers and shower spares, said: "When you have a mold or mildew problems in your home, it's vital to inspect the surrounding plumbing fixtures for leaks that may be causing the problem.

"In bathrooms, common areas of leaks are clogged shower heads or plumbing that has deteriorated with age."

To assist homeowners, the experts at The Shower Doctor have put together a list of the most effective ways to prevent mold and mildew growth.

1. Inspect the shower head for leaks
Turn the shower off and inspect the shower head. If it is cracked or shows signs of rust, it should be replaced immediately. Installing a new shower head and shower head holder can be a simple, do-it-yourself project, and there is a wide variety of available shower head choices in a number of different finishes such as white, chrome and gold.

2. Install a bathroom fan
Mold and mildew thrive where there is little or no air circulation. Installing a bathroom fan or simply running a floor fan in the room after showering will provide sufficient air circulation to help prevent any future mold or mildew growth.

3. Inspect drains for clogs
A drainage problem will cause water to pool in the bottom of a shower or bath. This standing water will raise the moisture level in the room and can contribute to the growth of mold spores. Simple clogs can be removed with widely available commercial drain cleaners, but severe or persistent clogs should be handled by a professional drain cleaning service.
