HCD’s future is bright, and we couldn’t be happier to have a team in place whose strengths are centered on maximizing the growth of our company while serving the dynamic information needs of hospitals and health systems.

Health Care DataWorks, Inc. (HCD), a leading provider of business intelligence solutions and healthcare analytics, has refocused its leadership team to better meet the ongoing challenges of hospitals and healthcare systems and build upon the successes it has achieved.

Detlev H. (Herb) Smaltz, who founded the company in 2008 and has served as chief executive officer and co-chairman of the HCD Board of Directors, will devote his efforts full time to the role of board chairman. Jeffrey Wilkins, who has served as board co-chair and chief financial officer, will become CEO. The leadership team structure will enable HCD to leverage the core strengths that Smaltz and Wilkins bring to the company.

“Our rapid success as a high-growth technology business has necessitated that we evolve as an organization,” Smaltz said. “We are refocusing our leadership team to achieve our full potential. HCD’s future is bright, and we couldn’t be happier to have a team in place whose strengths are centered on maximizing the growth of our company while serving the dynamic information needs of hospitals and health systems.”

As chairman, Smaltz will concentrate fully on business development and thought leadership, both of which contributed to HCD’s successes and will be critical to future growth. Smaltz is a recognized industry expert and is well respected among his peers. He is a Fellow of the Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society (FHIMSS) and served on the HIMSS Board of Directors, including its vice chair. He also is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

“Herb has opened many doors as we’ve evolved from a startup to a major industry player, and he will continue to do so as we move forward,” Wilkins said. “He has played the lead role in recruiting the necessary technology talent. By freeing Herb of everyday management responsibilities, he will be in a better position to draw upon his industry connections and knowledge in healthcare information technology to help us reach an even broader base of customers.”

As CEO, Wilkins will provide the business leadership and strategy that HCD needs as it enters the high-growth curve of its evolution. Wilkins has a track record of leading, managing and guiding the strategic direction for successful companies, including those in information technology. He served as chairman and CEO of Metatec International, Inc., a leading CD-ROM manufacturer he founded in 1985; chairman of CompuServe, Inc., which he founded and led to its global emergence of online information services to personal computers and businesses; consulted with The Ohio State University and Battelle on technology commercialization; and has extensive board experience with Cardinal Health, Inc., and Checkfree Corporation, among other diverse companies ranging from health care to financial services.
