Claims for pothole damage have more than doubled in the past year, with an estimated 1000 cars seriously damaged over the past four weeks.
The new figures released by AA Insurance reveal that all motorists had seen a tyre damaged, while one in five had suffered wheel damage. In some cases, drivers has lost control or swerved to try and avoid the pothole, only to hit something else.
Many motorists are unaware they may have the right to claim against the highway authority for damaged caused to their car because of potholes. In the past year, local authorities have lost £35 million in compensation claims.
