A house fire in Maryland that started in a kitchen and resulted in life-threatening injuries to a woman on Feb. 7, 2013, according to Gazette Newspapers in Maryland, was a stark reminder of how dangerous a house can be.

Power4Patriots is best known for teaching people how to build their own environmentally-friendly sources of energy such as solar panels and wind turbines so that they can slash their power bills and be safe when power outages occur. But the company is also very interested in keeping homeowners safe.

Fire and water damage caused by leaks and plumbing problems are two of the most significant fears that homeowners have. Accidents can happen to anyone, but homeowners who take precautions will decrease their odds of becoming victims of home calamities.

Here are Power4Patriots’ 5 precautions that homeowners should take to stay safe:

  •     Keep flammable materials away from stove-top burners and open oven doors. Don’t leave a working burner unattended.
  •     Insulate exposed pipes with foam sleeves. Even a small crack in a pipe can cause extensive water damage.
  •     Replace old circuit breakers, especially if fuses are being blown regularly or lights are flickering.
  •     Replace the washing machine’s rubber hoses with braided steel hoses.
  •     Sweep the chimney annually and make sure the screen is closed when a fire is burning.

Several of the above tips were about preventing fires, but what if it’s crucial to start a fire outdoors in a survival situation? Not everybody knows how to do it. Check out this Power4Patriots blog to learn 5 tricks to starting a fire.
