New Short Film Spotlights High-End Grill Maker’s Dedicated Workers

We thought, what would be more powerful than to have those faces and voices tell the story; unscripted and straight from the factory floor?

“American Craftsmanship from Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet”, a new film by Chicago-based design and production studio Mode Project, brings to life the pride, passion and artisanship of the craftspeople who “sweat the details” while cutting, welding, grinding and building Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet’s luxury outdoor kitchen equipment.

The brand is known for its innovative Hybrid Fire Grills, Artisan Fire Pizza Ovens and Weather-tight Cabinetry that are built in Kalamazoo, Michigan and shipped to homes across the globe. Mode Project created a mini-documentary that goes behind the scenes to show how the company’s made-to-order products rise from hand-picked sheets of stainless steel into the highest-performing outdoor cooking appliances available. As a final step, each Hybrid Fire Grill is signed by the team that built it.

“Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet wanted a film about craftsmanship, and looked to us for ideas to communicate that,” recalled Colin Carter, principal and creative director for Mode Project. The studio’s team traveled to southwest Michigan to scout for shooting. Carter said, “When we stepped into the plant, the pride and passion of their workers was clear, and that is what inspired us. We thought, what would be more powerful than to have those faces and voices tell the story; unscripted and straight from the factory floor?”

“Our products are the best in their category,” said Steve Adolph, president of Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet. “And craftsmanship is a big part of what makes them stand out. From the start, Mode Project developed a clear vision to tell that story and conveyed it in an unexpected way. The feedback we’ve received on the film has been tremendous.”

The marketing team at Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet approached Mode Project about the collaboration after seeing The Doughnut Vault, an award-winning short film created by the studio that sheds a unique perspective on the boutique doughnut business.

In addition to Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, Mode Project has recently worked with a number of globally recognized brands, including Marriott International, Gogo, United Airlines and more to create content that tells engaging stories about extraordinary products and companies.
