Laura Stubbs is a woman who faces challenges head on and, with grit and perseverance, sets her sights high as she embarks on her new business venture Beau Baskets.
“I have always enjoyed the experience of giving a gift, knowing that you have chosen something for someone that will make them smile and then actually seeing that happy moment when you present them with it, is truly what makes, what can sometimes be a stressful search for the ‘perfect gift’ worthwhile”.
At only 30 years old, Laura has had many incredible life experiences; some very positive, including being engaged, and married, becoming a mum and, starting out as a Mumpreneur in the world of business.
“The poor experiences in my life, although not pleasant, have contributed to leading me to where I am today. Following an unsuccessful back operation at the age of 21 it consequently led me to suffer even more difficulties, including losing the use and sensation in my legs, without warning, a number of times a year, often resulting in hospital admissions (at least 3 times a year) this had a massive impact on my career”.
At the time, Laura was working for the NHS and studying, half way through her degree, to become an occupational therapist. Due to her health issues, Laura was redeployed into a part-time administrative role and sadly, had to give up her university course. In the following years Laura found herself in a constant battle; trying to create a life as an employed person and not one on state benefits, however, she could not find the right balance and being in denial about her condition did not help her in managing it. As she eventually came to terms with the causes of flare ups of her condition, Laura made adaptations to her lifestyle and began to realise the type of work that would suit her and help her into sustained employment.
“After a stint running a Beauty & Well Being Salon, I began working as a wedding and events co-ordinator, I then found myself promoted to a Business Development Manager of a well-known Manchester Florist. I was involved in big projects, creating mood boards to pitch for big events and working with magazines such as OK magazine on Celebrity Weddings”.
Laura had voluntarily become known within her circle of friends and family for assisting in organising their weddings and events before it was a part of her job role and, on special occasions, found herself wanting to give more than a simple gift.
“I began creating Gift Baskets specifically for that person or event, be it for the birth of a baby, weddings or milestone birthday. I loved watching people’s reactions to the presentation alone, them stating they did not want to spoil it by opening it and their joy as they spotted the goodies presented behind the cellophane. The enjoyment I found in creating and giving the baskets combined with my new role within the florist I began to see I could make a business out of doing something I loved. I wanted to incorporate some of my experiences in life, to help me create both thoughtful and unique gifts, such as with the Get Well baskets; one of these would have done just the ticket in cheering me up after a hospital stay”.
Laura’s dream is to make Beau Baskets become the first thought in people’s minds when they require a special gift for someone and, for her to contribute to many happy occasions for people across the UK.
“It is important to me that the products we stock have values such as, British Designed /made, Organic or Natural; all things I believe more people care about these days.
"I am thrilled as I live and work in Salford, Manchester to be working with companies within the fantastic MediaCityUK and to have a base within a Designer Florist in the stylish Spinningfields, Manchester. I have to thank the Princes Trust for enrolling me on an Enterprise course and providing me with much needed confidence, as well as the support and care I have received from my wonderful family and friends over the years; in particular my husband, dad, sisters and brother in law. To have been recognised by Mumpreneur UK already with a website award has been brilliant and I am really looking forward to the exciting times and challenges ahead”.
Laura is an inspirational person who has a rare and definitive honesty in her business ethos. She is a true delight to meet and has, with her husband Rob, a great future ahead with Beau Baskets. A Business Woman of the Year in the future, no doubt.
