On February 15, the Muscular Development Store responds to a recent article from KDSK on the growing trend of weightlifting among girls. Although the number of young, female weightlifters is on the rise, a survey found that less than one quarter of them uses pre-workout supplements such as whey protein.
“One recent study found 81 percent of girls admitted to exercising more to gain muscle or tone, and 62 percent of girls changed their diets,” the article stated. The survey used girls from Minnesota that were high school-aged. Although it found they were lifting weights more for exercise, only 21 percent of them regularly used protein supplements to boost their results.
“The girls say they don't necessarily lift to be muscular or toned. Instead, it helps them stay in shape for other sports. Not to mention, it's helped with their appearance and self-confidence,” the article added. This is no surprise, according to the article. Boys are usually the ones that go at weights aggressively, while girls look at it as more of a technical workout.
Regardless of what techniques they use to exercise (or even if they exercise at all), teen girls need a proper amount of protein in order to maintain a healthy diet. The article quotes a registered dietician who asserts that “a girl between 11 and 14-years-old should have 50 grams of protein every day. Teen girls ages 14 to 18 need less, about 46 grams.”
Brian Turner, representative for the Muscular Development Store, responds to the article, recommending that girls consider adding a whey protein supplement to their diets as well. “Used as part of an intelligent, appropriate fitness routine, whey protein is healthy, and can boost your results when lifting,” he said. “It is especially useful for girls who are training for a sport. It will help them get stronger and be more competitive without bulking them up.”
Turner adds that people should be careful when using weights, especially when they are just starting out. Although weights are effective, they can lead to injury if not used properly.
