She’s starred in movies with the best of the best, including Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. She is a tireless philanthropist, devoting her vast fortune to support women’s health, the poor and disadvantaged, and the arts. And she paints.
Dina Merrill’s watercolors depict birds and flowers, and they reveal the revered actress’ keen eye. Artist and art instructor Ted Matz said Merrill’s perspective is indicative of the life she has led as an heiress and a starlet, of her charm and wit, and of her talent with the brush.
“Watercolors by Dina Merrill” opened Jan. 14 at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum and School of Art in Tequesta and will run through March 13. The Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum and School of Art is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For information, call 561-746-3101.
Merrill was born on Dec. 9, 1925, in New York City – the daughter of E.F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post. Hutton’s Wall Street fame became a household brand, and Post’s family’s breakfast cereal also became a household brand. The home Merrill grew up in, Mar-a-Lago, a breathtaking piece of Palm Beach real estate that stretches from the ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway, now is known as The Mar-a-Lago Club and has a new resident who might be the biggest household brand of them all: Donald Trump.
Merrill continues to call Palm Beach home and has a home on the island with her husband of 24 years, Ted Hartley. She is one of many public figures who live along the Gold Coast, considering all the PGA Tour, European Tour and Champions Tour golfers who live, work in play in the area. With Tiger Woods on Jupiter Island, Rory McIlroy in Palm Beach Gardens and Merrill on Palm Beach, there’s no doubt Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ clients are in good company.
