Friendly Competition: Jingu App Gets Gamely Upgrades

Following a month of explosive growth, social discovery app Jingu Friends has launched version 1.4 offering stickers, badges, following features and other fun new ways to meet people.

What Foursquare did for location sharing – adding a sense of fun, discovery and competition – Jingu is doing for social discovery.

Following a month of explosive growth – more than 100,000 new users in January alone – social discovery app Jingu Friends has launched a new version that promises fun new ways to meet new people.

Jingu Friends allows users to drop into open, global conversations in a common Lounge area, then easily connect one-on-one with like-minded users through smartphone messaging apps like WhatsApp and Kik.

Jingu has now added a slate of fun new features that inspire friendly competition and reciprocation. Users can build cred, reward one another for being awesome, and compete (in a friendly way, of course) for badges and other acknowledgements.

“We constantly poke our users to get feedback on how to make things better,” said Jingu co-founder Theban Ganesh. “That’s one of the primary reasons why our user base has exploded this year, and is growing tremendously every day.”

The newly launched Jingu Friends v1.4 allows others to earn badges – Great Conversationalist, for example, if a user can engage in multiple ongoing conversations, or International Player for users whose conversations bridge cultures and countries. Users can also reward friends with stickers – BFF or Devil, to name a few – which helps spark new conversations and friendships.

Other updates in the new version of Jingu Friends include:

  • A “follow” feature, allowing users to easily keep track of their favorite friends and amass their own followers
  • Tappable URLs, allowing for easier sharing of interesting links and content
  • A longer message limit, allowing 500 characters per message instead of 160

“Our goal has always been to give people a fun, easy way to connect with new people who share the same interests,” said Ganesh. “What Foursquare did for location sharing – adding a sense of fun, discovery and competition – Jingu is doing for social discovery.”
