Share Article has just launched its 2013 hunt for Americans or Canadians willing to live as expat retirees in Nicaragua for a month – all expenses paid. is looking for a single person or couple willing to spend a month road-testing an overseas retirement in colonial Granada, Nicaragua – a destination that earned high marks in their 2013 Global Retirement Index, a listing of the world’s best retirement havens.

According to’s want ad, entrants “Must be willing to relax… explore a new place… shop the local farmers and craft markets… take walks… attend festivals… maybe try a Spanish class… enjoy local restaurants… make new friends. Ideal candidate is of (or close to) retirement age, hails from the U.S. or Canada, and believes that – in the right places overseas – it’s possible to live better, for less.”

The overseas experts at have launched this competition to give the winner a chance to live in Granada for a month and report on the experience.

The winning entrant (plus a spouse, partner, or friend) will be given free flights to the Central American nation, paid-for accommodation in the colonial city of Granada, and a living stipend. Also included is a weekend away at a luxury Pacific-coast beach resort.

Although no writing experience is necessary, the winner will be asked to share impressions and experiences with readers of’s magazine, website and e-letters.

“This isn’t a free vacation,” explained International Living’s executive editor, Jennifer Stevens. “The idea is that we’ll give our winner a chance to really experience life on the ground.

“It’s an opportunity for us to shine a light for our readers on the real-world experiences of somebody who is considering the benefits of a retirement abroad – just like many of them are.”

Low-cost living, friendly locals, natural beauty, and a close proximity to North America have helped earn Nicaragua good marks on’s annual Global Retirement Index.

Stevens continued, “At International Living, we’ve been writing about Nicaragua for nearly two decades now, but it’s a nation really coming into its own today. This is a great time to experience that energy and see the progress afoot in person.”

Nicaragua has garnered lots of positive press recently. The New York Times lists the country among the top three places to visit in 2013… the Wall Street Journal just ran a piece about high-end tourism coming there… CNN pronounced Nicaragua “worth the effort.”

The winner will get a round-trip airfare (for two) to Nicaragua from his or her home city in the United States or Canada, a four-week stay in a furnished home in the historic city of Granada and a $1,500 living-expense stipend. In addition, the prize includes a weekend away at Rancho Santana, a luxury Pacific-coast resort. The resort will provide complimentary transportation from Granada and back, a two-bedroom villa for two nights, and a horseback ride and spa treatment for each guest.

In turn, the winner will document the month-long stay and share details on costs, what he or she does to stay busy, impressions of Granada and the Pacific coast and of living overseas.

If the winner’s reporting is used, will pay for it at the company’s regular freelance-writer rates – on top of the $1,500 living-expense stipend.

Last year’s competition winners – an American couple nearing retirement age and looking for a place to settle overseas – spent their month-long retirement “test-drive” in Cuenca, Ecuador. They beat out 585 other entrants to win a month away in 2012. They said of the experience, “We met lots of great people, and really explored the area… we certainly enjoyed the wild ride of the contest itself, and we loved the chance to experience ‘living’ in Cuenca for the month.”

Those wishing to enter the “Win Your Dream Retirement Overseas” Competition 2013, can do so by posting a video to YouTube (no more than three minutes in length) explaining why they would like to retire overseas – and why they would like to try a one-month test-drive in Nicaragua.

The deadline for submitting videos is midnight EST on April 2, 2013. Candidates must be ready to fly to Nicaragua before the end of 2013.
