Opera is a dynamic art form when performed in concert and more so when staged. Author Shlomo Hoffert believes that opera is more than just a combination of expertly composed music and dazzling theatrics, to him this art form is humankind’s heart and soul in motion. In his new book, When the Fat Lady Sings...Listen, Hoffert explores this creative expression in light of psychodynamics while taking readers on an insightful journey into the dazzling world of Italian opera.

When the Fat Lady Sings...Listen features seven masterpieces in Italian opera. The interactions of the characters of each are discussed in psychodynamic terms. Hoffert also uses the composer’s music/text to illustrate the 3D nature of the characters involved. His discussion provides readers with a more comprehensive appreciation of the genius of the opera composer in telling a real human story.

Hoffert’s knowledge of opera stems from over half a century of exposure and personal interest. His book is a combination of his passion for this art form and his background in psychotherapy. It is also a medium for which he shares what he discovered throughout the years he spent appreciating opera.

“I hope the reader will come away with a greater appreciation of opera as a form of drama and of the composer’s use of music in the service of the drama. Music is a tool used to describe human dynamics,” he says.

Captivating and informative, When the Fat Lady Sings...Listen is both a celebration of opera and an invitation to appreciate and understand this art form in a fascinating new light.
