3D Printing with Copyrights: FABULONIA Solves Challenge with New Technology and Services

Share Article

Startup FABULONIA unveils today a milestone innovation in 3D printing: designers and companies can now securely monetize online with original 3D designs, tackling piracy without limiting the creative freedom of 3D printing.

FABULONIA brings original designs to 3D printing consumers

Creativity, customization and originality are all needed. This nascent industry is still too technology driven. Consumers are not interested in CAD or STL files. They want a simple way to discover their favorite brand and designer originals.

3D printing is quickly becoming an industrial revolution. However, piracy threatens the livelihood of both professional designers and brands. Illegal design blueprints are being distributed online and a number of cease-and-desist orders have been issued to websites allowing this new form of piracy.

FABULONIA's new approach is presented at Mobile World Congress at Stand 8.1C40 and is the answer to how to foster the creativity of 3D printing while protecting the intellectual property of designers.

Until now, designers and companies have had to resort to offline 3D printing services and home delivery of ready 3D objects. Now, with FABULONIA, sales and printing can happen securely through both offline services and increasingly to consumer 3D printers directly. The home manufacturing market is expected to grow rapidly to cover hundreds of millions of consumers.

FABULONIA's solution covers all the necessary steps from the upload of 3D designs and storage to distribution, using new patent-pending technologies, such as the Collaborative Copyright Technology and Secure 3D Streaming. It is not based on old Digital Rights Management schemes and FABULONIA calls it a consumer and ecosystem friendly approach to copyrights.

FABULONIA's 3D Business Platforms and Services for 3D Printing for enterprises and designers are showcased at Mobile World Congress at Estonia Stand 8.1C40. With this solution, any original design rights holder can open and run online marketplaces, offering customization and sales of 3D originals. Different levels of copyright protection can be applied, such as free unlimited distribution or paid licenses. Marketplaces can be hosted in FABULONIA's or in private clouds, even using own branded 3D printers.

Cloud optimization of FABULONIA is just one of the benefits. The offering is future-proof and manufacturer-independent by being able to support any 3D printer, design format, printing format or website. It can be integrated into both enterprise and institutional legacy systems, run in private or hosted environments.

A great 3D printing solution should satisfy three critical needs to be successful.
Says Kimmo Isbjörnssund, CEO of FABULONIA: “Creativity, customization and originality are all needed. This nascent industry is still too technology driven. Consumers are not interested in CAD or STL files. They want a simple way to discover their favorite brands and designers or high-quality originals that are easily and affordably available. Consumers are willing to pay for good design because it adds value to things around us. FABULONIA connects brands and designers with these consumers. The freedom of 3D printing can continue and designers rely on making a living. Without original designs there wouldn't be enough consumer interest in 3D printing so FABULONIA is just helping the market grow”.

FABULONIA also showcases a new HTML5-based shopping experience for simple discovery and customization of original designs from selected designers.

Product designers, such as Finnish Ilkka Suppanen (Red Dot award winner), and jewelry designers Kristian Saarikorpi and Petri Pulliainen are among those shown in FABULONIA's Marketplace demo.

In the home city of MWC, Makers of Barcelona, a large creative community founded by Hong Kong born Cecilia Tham, is also shown and are planning original 3D design services with FABULONIA.

FABULONIA is in in the middle of discussions with several enterprises to take their 3D original designs business securely online, equipping them for the imminent rise of consumer 3D printing.

FABULONIA is the world's first company to protect designer copyrights in 3D printing while preserving creative freedom. We use a proprietary, non-DRM Collaborative Copyright Technology.
