Following an article published by ABC 23 in Bakersfield, Calif. detailing a potential bill that calls for mattress recycling, mattress store Online Bed Quilt confirms the need to recycle mattresses and reduce waste.

On February 21, leading mattress store, Online Bed Quilt, responds to an article posted by ABC 23 in California regarding a proposed bill, which calls for a mattress recycling program.

According to ABC 23, California State Senator Lori Hancock, D-Berkeley noticed that people have been dumping trash on deserted corners in Bakersfield, Calif. While people have been dumping bags of trash and random pieces of furniture, the main problem has been illegal mattress disposal, reports ABC 23.

The Bakersfield Solid Waste Director Kevin Barnes said illegal mattress dumping is a severe problem in the area. “We probably spend three or four hours a week, of a person's time dealing with that problem. Any help that we can get to prevent that would be great,” he said in the article.

Representative Justin Maas from the mattress store, Online Bed Quilt, said mattresses are built to last and the materials are not easily disposed of. “Mattresses are comprised of a lot of different components,” he said. “There are springs, metal, foam, fabric and other things that don’t disintegrate. There is definitely a need to create some sort of mattress disposal program.”

Sen. Hancock, according to ABC 23, introduced a recycling program for mattresses in a new bill called SB 254 last week. The proposed bill is an effort to save local governments money and minimize blight. Sen. Hancock said, “California's 10 largest cities 470,000 mattresses are illegally disposed of each year, costing local governments $20 annually.”

Maas said many states are setting up local mattress recycling programs to battle the same issues. “Recycling mattresses end up saving local government a lot of money and stress from picking up illegally dumped mattresses,” he said. “This bill is definitely a step in the right direction for Bakersfield and I hope they realize the importance of recycling mattresses.”
