In “Straightjacket Memories” (published by CrossBooks), author Jonathan Nelson reveals to readers his very personal struggle to overcome bipolar disorder and the effects it was having on his life and his marriage.
In 2008, Nelson was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a diagnosis that nearly destroyed his faith and his family. Today, he has control over his disease and victory through Jesus Christ. Though his story is a personal one, he strives to help others with depression and mental disorders find the same peace that he experiences today.
An excerpt from “Straightjacket Memories”:
“Several years ago, I was talking with a colleague and she said that a guy her daughter is dating is a psycho and that he must be bipolar. I was quietly offended by this statement, yet felt sad that this individual was unaware of what a person who is truly bipolar goes through. Although the person’s behavior may not appear rational and even at times bizarre, a person with bipolar disorder is often found to be creatively talented and gifted. People with the disorder excel in various areas and are many times brilliant, yet when it comes to daily routines, they can find themselves lost and unable to perform even the slightest task.”
Nelson knows his book has wide-ranging appeal. “Everyone knows someone who struggles with depression and anxiety,” he writes. “They may even experience it themselves. I’m living proof that prayer changes things – you can live with bipolar disorder and still follow a Christian lifestyle.”
