“I wanted to create a sports bar for the better half. A place where you can enjoy sports on large HD TVs with a cold beer, or enjoy a glass of wine from a hand-selected wine list by the fire in our lounge.” Jim Beran, Owner of The Surfin Cowboy

“It was famous before it opened...Now its epic!,” says owner Jim Beran of The Surfin Cowboy, a new sports lounge in the Capistrano Beach section of Dana Point, opened its doors Super Bowl Weekend, bringing a fresh atmosphere and attitude to the popular spot formerly home of the tiki style dive bar, Coconuts.

The Surfin Cowboy boasts a foodie inspired menu designed by Executive Chef Sima Ganaba, formerly of The Resort at Pelican Hill, with a full lunch and dinner menu with brunch served on Saturdays and Sundays. Chef Ganaba’s menu goes above and beyond the standard sports bar fare featuring Fried Mac n’ Cheese Balls, Crispy Pork Belly, gourmet salads, burgers and sandwiches, and creative entrees including a 14oz Bone-in Aged Porterhouse Steak and authentic Southern Shrimp and Grits.

Equally impressive is the diverse craft cocktail menu designed by Professional Mixologist and General Manager, David Valiante. Guests can expect to find fresh hand crafted cocktails and classic twists made with fresh juices, bitters and premium spirits, such as The Bucking Bronco, Southside, Widow’s Kiss and Duke’s Last Stand. The craft beer and wine lists are hand-selected to pair perfectly with the chef’s innovative Western Americano cuisine.

Owner Jim Beran had a clear vision in mind for his latest endeavor. “I wanted to create a sports bar for the better half. A place where you can enjoy sports on large HD TVs with a cold beer, or enjoy a glass of wine from a hand-selected wine list by the fire in our lounge.” To share his vision, Beran had a special plaque designed to greet guests that reads, ‘I neither surf nor ride, but I am The Surfin Cowboy. I am not a place nor a person, but a state of mind.’ A “state of mind” he is eager to share!

The Surfin Cowboy will host a Grand Opening Reception on Friday, February 22 at 3:30pm with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring food and drink specials throughout the night. DJ Impact will spin from 9pm-1am on Friday and popular country artist Hollywood Yates, returning home from a national tour, will play for the crowds on Saturday (February 23rd) from 9pm-12am.
