In anticipation for the Inaugural Wilmington Race for the Cure®, four teams of runners will participate in the RunRaleigh Relay to Wilmington on February 28. The 132-mile route begins in Raleigh at the offices of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® North Carolina Triangle to the Coast Affiliate at 133 Fayetteville Street and ends in Wilmington at the intersection of 2nd and Market Street.

The teams participating in the relay are the North Carolina Road Runners (NCRC), Savage Crew (N.C. State graduate students), Wake Forest Area Runners (WFAR) and RunRaleigh Races. The groups will depart Raleigh at 9 a.m on Thursday, February 28, projecting a run time of 27 hours and arriving on Friday March 1st, at 12 p.m.

Captain Linda Jackson, a retired Raleigh Police Officer and breast cancer survivor, will drive an RV alongside the runners. Police escorts will be provided in Raleigh and throughout Wake County. Various Sheriff’s departments will also assist the runners along the route in each of the different counties.

The goal of the run is not only to increase breast cancer awareness and raise participation in the Inaugural Historic Wilmington Race for the Cure but also promote fitness and healthy lifestyles. Prior to the 2012 Triangle Race for the Cure, a group of runners from Carolina Beach successfully ran a similar route to Raleigh.

Hosted by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Carolina Triangle to the Coast Affiliate, the family event will be held Saturday, March 2, and will feature 5K Race/Walks, a Kid Zone, and a Survivor Breakfast, all in support of a cause dedicated to saving lives. Click here to register

The Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast Affiliate serves 29 counties in central and eastern North Carolina; holding two annual Race for the Cure events in Raleigh and Wilmington. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds generated by the Affiliate stay in the service area. In 2012, $1.1 million was distributed to 19 service agencies to provide a continuum of breast health services to underinsured and uninsured women in our service area. The remaining twenty-five percent funds national breast cancer research; the Affiliate contributed $400,000 in 2012. That same year, $2.4 was returned to the area in the form of research grants at Duke and the University of North Carolina.
