Small and medium enterprises, by their nature, are often more adversely affected by sudden changes in market conditions than their larger corporatized counterparts. The “mom-and-pop” nature of many modest operations can also use an increase in professionalism. In Sustainability and the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Becoming More Professional, author Michael J Sheehan offers ways to help SME owners and operators change and improve the prospects of their businesses and their long-term outlook in the ever-changing conditions of the global economy.

Sheehan states that SMEs need to become more sustainable, and that they need to become more professional in their outlook and approach in order to reach that goal of sustainability. Through this process, they will be better able to deal with the instability, complexity, ambiguity and uncertainty of change and the increasing pressures it brings about. In this work, the author outlines what he means by sustainability and professionalism, and presents strategies for how SME owners and managers might become more professional by focusing on the development of their own, and their employees’, “soft skills.” The author also draws from a range of business theories to support his arguments and his propositions, and offers comprehensive methods by which SME operators can change their existing system to meet the evolving conditions of the free market in all its volatility and unpredictability.

In this ever-changing world, with the competition brought about by encroaching larger businesses and the difficulties posed by intrusive big government regulations, small and medium enterprises need all the help they can get in order to not just survive, but also prosper in the face of their opposition. Sheehan shows readers, whether they be SME operators or those still aspiring to start their own businesses, how to face these challenges in Sustainability and the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Becoming More Professional.
