On February 22, mattress review company Online Bed Quilt issues a statement in response to an article published by CBS Minnesota, which discusses how certain sleep positions help you sleep better.
According to [CBS Minnesota, quality of sleep often depends on your position in the bed. While stress could impact your sleep, CBS Minnesota reports that the position you’re sleeping in could be what’s causing disruptions during the night.
Dr. Michael Howell of the University of Minnesota said to CBS Minnesota that all positions have side effects. People who sleep on their backs are more likely to snore and could not only bother sleeping partners it could also cause more serious problems. Howell said snoring could interrupt sleep and even affects the way your heart works. According to Howell’s research with the Fairview Southdale Sleep Center, revealed approximately half of adults snore in their sleep.
CBS Minnesota reports that snoring can lead to other serious conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, a severe sleep breathing disorder which could cause the upper airway to collapse.
“[Snoring] fragments your sleep so you’re less restful. It also creates quite a bit of pressure on the heart. It increases risk of heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke,” Howell said to CBS Minnesota.
Justin Maas, a representative from leading mattress review company Online Bed Quilt, said sleeping on your side is a good way to alleviate pressure from your back. “One of the reasons sleeping on your side helps you fall asleep is because it takes the pressure off your bones that have been stressed all day,” he said. “The weight is being taken off of your back and your spine falls into alignment.”
Maas also suggested replacing your mattress every 8-10 years. “Mattresses expire just like anything else,” he said. “When you sleep in them, night after night, they get worn out, just like shoes. You wouldn’t wear a shoe with a hole in it, so why would you continue sleeping on a mattress that has a permanent dent from your body. In order to sleep better, you need to make sure you have a quality mattress that is right for your body type.”
