Florida City, FL (PRWEB) February 22, 2013
February is National Heart Health Month! On February 20th, Branches (formerly South Florida Urban Ministries) teamed up with Molina Healthcare for a “Hula Hoop for Heart Health” contest to create awareness about the importance of heart health. In addition to hula hooping contests, there were craft tables and a nutrition expert from Molina teaching the Branches after school students about healthy eating. Over 80 children participated in the fun activities, and had the chance to get some exercise and have the opportunity to raise money, donated by Molina Healthcare, for Branches. The children were also joined by Dr. Cleo, Molina’s cat doctor mascot.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. In Florida, there are approximately 42,000 deaths per year from cardiovascular disease. Many of the risk factors for heart disease, such as family history, cannot be influenced, but there are ways to minimize risk including: eating a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol and taking medication.
Hula hooping is a fun and cost-effective way to generate health benefits. It is a low-impact activity that can help regulate your body weight and build cardiovascular endurance. It also burns 200 calories every 30 minutes and can help reduce or relieve stress.
WHEN and WHERE: Wednesday, February 20th at 3:00p.m-5:00p.m.
