75% of UK Business Employees Unsuitable for Current Roles According to Recruitment Expert

In a recent interview with FindtheEdge.co.uk, employee resourcing and development guru Roger Philby says 75% of employees are in the wrong role, and says a complete rethink of traditional recruitment methods are needed.

Companies across the UK are sacrificing productivity and profits because 75% of their employees are unsuitable for the roles they are currently in, a leading recruitment psychology expert has said.

In an insightful interview with new business website FindtheEdge.co.uk, Roger Philby - CEO and founder of The Chemistry Group - also dismissed the validity of the recruitment industry's work.

He said: "We can prove, and we know for fact, that previous experience is the least reliable predictor of future performance.

"The main thing that's wrong with recruitment is that people are hiring the wrong people for their organisation.

"We reckon only 25% of all the hires that are made for corporate organisations are the right people for that business, in that time, in that role.

“For example, in 2009 we surveyed FTSE 250 HR Directors, as usual the response wasn't huge but it was sufficient to draw some conclusions. The principal question was this, "would you rehire your workforce given the option or start again?" Sixty-eight percent of respondents said they would not rehire their workforce.

"Frankly, we weren’t shocked by this. Chemistry frequently challenges people to name the people in their team(s) they would hire again. In one infamous example, I asked a CEO who in his sales force he would hire again based on what he knows now, and if he could name more than 25 in 100, I would give him an eye-watering discount to our work. He got to 17 in 100 and had to give up."

Philby's own consultancy company has risen to prominence by encouraging businesses to recruit based on factors other than past experience, helping them to dramatically boost the numbers of value-adding individuals in their ranks.

In the interview, he describes The Chemistry Group's alternate 'Five Box Model' for efficient recruitment in detail. Designed to filter out unsuitable candidates, it has been used to successfully increase the hiring accuracy of a variety of blue-chip businesses.

Philby explains that the model places little emphasis on experience and past achievements, as the organisation believes a compatible candidate, who is the right fit, can be taught these behaviours through effective training.

He said: "Our clients tell us our processes and methodologies are up to 86% accurate in predicting the future performance of the individual.

"We have a fundamental belief that individuals and organisations do not invest enough time in finding out if the chemistry's right."
