BCG Attorney Search, a premier legal search firm in the United States, is making enormous strides in the area of diversity recruiting. The company is pleased to announce that they have asked West Coast Managing Director Evan Anderson to lead the firm’s Diversity Recruiting Practice. Based out of BCG’s San Francisco, CA, office, the Practice will focus specifically on the employment needs of candidates reflecting gender, ethnic, and LBGT diversity.

Anderson, who has been with BCG Attorney Search for three years, will be spearheading the firm’s Diversity Recruiting Practice, which gives name to the firm’s ongoing commitment to placing candidates from underrepresented populations. Mr. Anderson has a demonstrated history in working with diverse candidates, but by establishing the Diversity Recruiting Practice under his leadership, BCG seeks to solidify its commitment to providing law firms with the best attorneys and connecting candidates with employers who are dedicated to promoting inclusiveness.

“Hiring diverse talent is imperative these days if law firms want to remain competitive,” said Anderson, who also noted that the motivators driving diversity recruiting and retention are changing. “The diversity requirements of law firms’ corporate clients initially drove the focus on hiring diverse attorneys—so there was a lot of social and business pressure to hire women, people of color, and gay and lesbian attorneys, at least in the beginning. But many firms have begun to recognize that by hiring diverse candidates, they attract—and retain—attorneys that have the capacity to think outside the box and bring in new and different kinds of business. Firms understand that each attorney brings their own unique experiences to the table, and that means a wider variety of strategies for tackling challenges, acquiring clients, and keeping the firm relevant in today’s marketplace.”

Law firms have been particularly focused on creating a diverse workforce for the last ten years. While some improvements have been realized, there is still much work to be done. The latest available data provided by the American Bar Association indicates that, in 2010, 88.1% of lawyers were white, and 70% were male. According to the Association for Legal Career Professionals, in 2012, only about 2% of attorneys were openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. This number continues to grow, but as of now, only about half of all American law firms report that they employ an LBGT attorney, and 60% of these firms are based in New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and San Francisco.

While a number of smaller recruiting firms focus exclusively on diversity candidates, BCG Attorney Search is the first of the larger national legal recruiting firms to focus on diversity hiring. By renewing their focus on diverse candidates, BCG expects to place hundreds of attorneys at firms across the globe and play a key role in diversifying the legal industry.

“This practice is a way for us to demonstrate BCG’s commitment to law firms’ diversity initiatives and overall success,” said Anderson. “The majority of my candidates are already diverse, but this is a much more focused initiative on meeting our clients’ diversity needs. I will continue to work with qualified candidates across all practice areas, but we will make concerted efforts to attract diverse candidates.”

Anderson joined BCG Attorney Search after a long career in the legal management consulting field. While working as a senior legal career advisor to Shannon & Manch LLP, he assisted LBGT, women, and ethnically diverse attorneys to secure positions at law firms in New York, California, and Washington D.C., and advised them on their long-term career plans. Anderson has also developed and presented workshops to law firms that focused on talent retention and diversity awareness. Leading BCG Attorney Search’s Diversity Recruiting Practice is the confluence of many aspects of his lengthy career.
