According to Psych Central, people have a variety of different sleep patterns ranging from normal sleep patterns to sleep deprivation caused by insomnia. Psych Central reports that there are some people who don’t feel rested even after getting a full night of sleep. All of these scenarios are common in people with sleep disorders, Psych Central reports, but there are certain things that could be done to minimize the effects.

After determining how much sleep you require, Psych Central adds that it is important to make sure you eat a healthy diet. According to Psych Central, alcohol and acidic food can cause sleep disturbances that can wake you up or leave you feeling groggy in the morning and to limit eating before bed. If you’re hungry, Psych Central advises to eat something high in protein, but low in sugar.

Justin Maas, a representative from mattress delivery store Online Bed Quilt, said diet does have an impact on sleep. “If you eat food right before bed, your body isn’t going to be able to shut down properly because it will want to work off the calories you just consumed,” he said. “You should limit food intake before bed and make sure you don’t eat late at night.”

Maas also said creating a peaceful sleep environment is extremely important for getting quality sleep. He suggested making the room very dark and quiet. “Light and noise are going to bother you no matter if you are a heavy sleeper or a light sleeper,” he said. “It’s best to sleep in a dark, quiet environment because there is a lesser chance of being woken up. “

Mattresses are also a factor within the sleep environment, Maas said. “Mattresses are the most important part of the sleep environment because they are what you are sleeping on for hours each night,” he said. “You have to pick a mattress that supports your body type and makes you feel comfortable. There are all different types including memory foam, adjustable and pillow-top. Make sure you try each one to find the one best for you. A new mattress could really improve your sleep patterns.”
