The Oxford comma clarifies meaning when placed before conjunctions like “or” and “and” in a series of words in a sentence. The Oxford comma may be unnecessary in a simple list, but adds clarity in sentences with complicated lists.

“There are many arguments both for and against the placement or absence of the Oxford comma,” shared Michelle LaFrance, spokesperson for “Showcasing the differences in a graphic representation gives a fresh, visual perspective to this punctuation.”

Guidelines such as the Elements of Style or the Chicago Manual of Style suggest using (and committing) to the Oxford comma, according to the infographic. In other situations, like journalistic writing, adhering to The Associated Press guidelines means omitting the Oxford comma.

“As an education resource this grammar-based infographic is informative to our users and even a bit utilitarian,” continued LaFrance. “It seems that comma usage boils down to preference and situation.”
