Debbie Kim, SkimaTalk’s most successful teacher in 2012 goes over her five key tips to teaching excellence.

I think it’s very important for teachers to be encouraging and to be friendly so that students can build confidence in themselves, which is the most important thing to learning a new language.

SkimaTalk Inc., an education startup based in Berkeley, CA, has released a video tutorial from their most successful teacher of 2012, Debbie Kim. In 2012 alone, Ms. Kim conducted over 400 sessions with English language-learners, with over 99 percent of her students giving her a rating of five stars – SkimaTalk’s highest teacher ranking. In the tutorial, Ms. Kim explains what made her the successful teacher she has become. According to Ms. Kim, the five key principles are: 1) adhering to SkimaTalk’s teaching guidelines program; 2) fostering a comfortable learning atmosphere; 3) ensuring session’s productivity; 4) giving detailed feedback; and 5) being enthusiastic about teaching and making the session fun.

Notably, before joining SkimaTalk, Ms. Kim did not have an extensive background in education nor did she have extensive experiences in teaching English. SkimaTalk’s mission, to “find untapped knowledge across the globe and make it sharable and accessible anywhere, anytime,” fits with Debbie’s model of self-motivated success. SkimaTalk’s vision, to “foster the future of learning by empowering individuals to share their knowledge globally,” encourages teachers and learners of all levels to congregate on the SkimaTalk platform and to cultivate an open learning environment.

SkimaTalk continues to recruit native English speakers including talented and enthusiastic college students and recent college graduates who want to earn money by conducting online video teaching sessions with English language learners in Japan, Korea, and Italy. The majority of SkimaTalk teachers started teaching without any prior teaching experience or certification, and for many students, the teacher’s passion and willingness to help others matter more.
