The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) is now accepting applications for its 2013 Scholarship Program. USGIF is dedicated to helping students succeed within the field of geospatial sciences, which in turn helps further the advancement of the geospatial tradecraft. Students interested in the geospatial intelligence field are encouraged to submit their application before the April 19, 2013 deadline. Applications can be downloaded at http://usgif.org/education/scholarships.

This scholarship opportunity is available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students showing an academic and professional excellence in fields such as geography, computer science, engineering, biology, political science, sociology, anthropology, or any other field related to the natural or social sciences.

USGIF Academic Director, Dr. Max Baber, explains, “Supporting student education and research with USGIF scholarships helps expand the horizon of our geospatial capabilities. Scholarship recipients represent a broad assortment of geospatial interests, including humanitarian operations, natural disaster preparation and response, epidemiology, conflict along borders and modeling of river water quality. All of these interests lie within the broader definition of national security, which gives an excellent opportunity for innovative students to be recognized and supported for their efforts.”

Last year USGIF awarded $104,000 to 25 recipients and plans to award at least $100,000 for 2013. High school recipients are awarded $2,000 per scholarship, while others are awarded $5,000 each. Since the scholarship program’s start in 2004, USGIF has awarded $584,000 in scholarship funding to promising students in the GEOINT field. Past recipients have found the scholarship to be an extraordinary benefit in networking with GEOINT professionals and finding job opportunities at top geospatial intelligence companies around the country.
