The Academy Awards is the biggest night of the year for Hollywood fashion so it’s no surprise that stars turn up the glamor big time. Kate Beckinsale made a statement in a strapless black Monique Lhuillier gown with a sunburst design and full skirt at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party at Sunset Tower. At the same event, Isla Fisher and Ginnifer Goodwin stepped out in royal blue confections, also by the designer and FIDM alumna. Fisher’s curve-hugging strapless gown had glamorous train, while Goodwin chose a short and sparkly cocktail dress.

Louise Roe, the new host of NBC’s Fashion Star, chose Lhuillier for her Oscar red carpet look. She donned a stunning nude and coral embroidered tulle gown with a full skirt. Two of Lhuillier’s fellow FIDM graduates, Johana Hernandez and Priscilla Barroso, respectively, will appear on the second season of the fashion competition show for a chance to launch their lines at Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Express.

Lhuillier, who majored in fashion design at FIDM, launched her self-titled company in 1996 with a bridal collection. After becoming a top American wedding dress designer, Lhuillier added ready-to-wear and evening-wear in 2001. She has attracted fans such as Kristen Stewart, Drew Barrymore, Hilary Swank, and Katie Holmes. There are Monique Lhuillier salons in Beverly Hills and Minneapolis.

“I didn’t know how to cut and sew before I came to FIDM,” Lhuillier explains. “When I was a student I was full of dreams and knew I loved clothing, but I was also scared. I was fortunate that I could start my own line and risk it all.” In addition to her success in fashion, Lhuillier designs a tabletop collection for Royal Doulton, stationery and fine paper, and a bed, bath, and home collection.
