Linus Bike responds to an article released by The Collegian that talks about the merits of city biking, applauding recent efforts in Manhattan to boost the city's biking accommodations.

The Collegian article first identifies the low cost (as compared to owning a car) of a commuter bike as one of the primary benefits of the cycling lifestyle. The other major benefit is cited as being the health factor, with bikes creating an excellent opportunity for exercise.

The City of Manhattan and a number of local businesses are reported to be actively working on ways to encourage more city dwellers to use bikes. Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Manhattan, Danielle Vaughn, is quoted as saying she believes that Manhattan is already highly bike-accessible. She goes on to say that bike boulevards have been planned because they offer a greater sense of safety than traditional exposed bike lanes.

“We live in such a small town, and there are already a lot of bike-accessible places in town,” Vaughn said. “You see tons and tons of people driving cars for two or three miles. Riding a bike helps people to connect more with nature and people around them.”

A local business offers a bike restoration and a rental program. (The bike rental program was boasted as being active all year round but was subject to variation based on weather and season.) The article reports that the League of American Bicyclists named Manhattan a “Bicycle Friendly Community” in 2012. “Manhattan received a bronze award, the first of four levels, based on engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, evaluation and planning of bicycle resources and opportunities.”

China Reevers, Linus Bike representative, offers her support for Manhattan’s push to become even more bike-friendly. “Manhattan is such an iconic city; it could easily take on the task of being a role model for what a city can do to make biking a more inviting prospect. It is encouraging to hear that the efforts are coming from all levels, too. If cycling has the support of the city, the businesses, and the community at large it is only a matter of time before further developments take hold and promote the growth of an active biking community.”

Linus Bike is a California-based bicycle manufacturer that specializes in creating vintage style city bikes and commuter bikes.
