On February 28, Linus Bike, cycling advocates and manufacturers of Old World-style city and commuter bicycles, issues a response to a Belfast Telegraph article reporting an increased number of cyclists in Dublin, with “Nearly one in every 10 (8.8%) journeys taken in [Dublin]” being made by bicycle, according to the findings of a recent survey.
The Belfast Telegraph article reports further that the survey indicates that the number of cyclists in Dublin have doubled in an eight-year span. The chairing councilor for the traffic committee, Andrew Montague, asserts that initiatives aimed at getting more people to become cyclists are proving effective. Montague feels that movement within the city is easiest for cyclists, and he hopes to continue promoting the growth of the number of commuter bikes on the road.
According to the cited survey, the data indicated a sixteen percent growth in the number of cyclists in a year’s time. The Dublin City Council said the results are a testament to the success of initiatives to improve city transportation and expressed confidence in seeing continued progress in the future.
Linus Bike representative, China Reevers, makes a comment on Dublin’s efforts to promote biking as a primary means of transportation. “The growing number of cyclists in Dublin is convincing evidence that people are inclined to use bikes as a viable means to commute, not just as a recreational outlet. It seems that any city infrastructure dedicated to safe and feasible biking will see a rise in the number of cyclists. We're seeing this in cities all over America as well, and it's absolutely inspiring.”
