Worcester County High School Senior, Jason Girouard, Recognized by MADD National President and Wins iPad

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), along with Presenting Sponsor State Farm, is announcing today that Jason Girouard is the grand prize winner of the second annual Power of You(th)® Video Contest, which asked teens around the country to create a short video to encourage their peers to avoid drinking alcohol before age 21. Girouard, age 17, lives in Brimfield, Mass. and is currently a senior at Tantasqua Regional High School, where today’s announcement took place. His winning one-minute video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddBbElAAv5E&feature=youtu.be) depicts two friends discussing weekend plans, one suggesting a party with alcohol and the other saying “I don’t need that,” and suggesting they play video games instead.

“The Power of You(th) program is all about empowering teens to take a stand against underage drinking, and Jason’s winning video is a great example of how teens can influence each other to have fun without alcohol,” said MADD National President Jan Withers. “MADD and State Farm are thrilled to have an opportunity to share this important message by working to make this video available as a national public service announcement.”

"It is inspirational to witness young people making a meaningful difference in their communities through the Power of You(th) Video Contest. State Farm is honored to partner with MADD on this important initiative that empowers and educates teens about the risks associated with underage drinking,” said Kellie Clapper, Assistant Vice President of Community Relations for State Farm.

The video contest is part of MADD’s Power of You(th) program to empower teens to say no to alcohol and never get in a car with someone who’s been drinking. Girouard’s video was selected from numerous entries submitted by teens across the country, based on its creativity, quality and overall underage drinking prevention message.

Teen alcohol use kills about 5,000 people each year — more than all other illegal drugs combined. While this number is startling, it’s important for teens to know that even though it seems like everyone is drinking, research shows that only one in six teens binge drinks, which means that five out of six teens don’t binge drink. The Power of You(th) program includes a teen-focused booklet, called The 411 on Teen Drinking, which provides teens with this information and more, empowering them to make good choices and resist alcohol.
