The average summer class was just nine in 2012, but still up from the historic low of eight in 2010 and 2011.

Legal job search website LawCrossing.com has been able to gather over 4,000 law student jobs. This includes judicial clerkships and summer associate positions.
The high number of job openings for law students that LawCrossing.com has been able to track down comes in the face of a recent NALP report that suggests that summer associate programs are at best flat in most law firms. The report says that even entry-level hiring has still not fully recovered.
According to the NALP report, law firms have limited their entry-level hiring for the fourth year in a row now. Also, the total headcount is still below the pre-recession numbers. But the main area of concern for law students is that recruiting volumes by law firms on college campuses was “mostly flat during the late summer and early fall of 2012 compared with recruiting activity the year before”.
The offer rate went down slightly for the summer associates of 2012, from 91.4 % in 2011 to 90.2% in 2012. The average summer class was just nine in 2012, but still up from the historic low of eight in 2010 and 2011.
James Leipold, NALP’s Executive Director has said , “It’s clear that 2013 is not likely to be dramatically better.” He also added, “I would expect flat and faltering to be characteristics of the entry-level law firm hiring market going forward, at least for the short and even medium term. Multiple experts have made the case that the legal market is not likely to return to pre-2007 levels, and the recruiting environment reflects that reality.”
The job openings on LawCrossing.com also show that while the job openings have not reached their pre-recession levels, there are still thousands of jobs across the country. The site has been able to track down 3,225 law student job openings, 449 judicial clerkships and 1,012 summer associate positions.
There are a total of 57,156 legal industry jobs in the U.S. on the site. 29,000 of those jobs are for attorneys and another are 1,392 partner opportunities. There are also 12,532 legal staff job listings.
