In response to an article published by the Detroit Free Press, which discusses how to moisturize skin during the cold winter months, Italian olive oil company Bellucci Premium advises consumers to use olive oil on skin and hair.

On February 28, Natalie Sexenian, the marketing manager for Bellucci Premium, comments on an article posted by the Detroit Free Press, which gives tips on how to soften skin in cold weather.

According to Detroit Free Press, dry, cold weather tends to harden skin and cause it to crack. Excess heat in the home can also cause moisture to evaporate on the skin, making it rough and dry. However, Clinton Township manicurist Maryann McGowan-Grau said that olive oil could really help with dry skin.

McGowan-Grau suggested mixing olive oil and salt together to create an exfoliating scrub for your hands, legs or feet. According to McGowan-Grau the exfoliation helps the moisture from the olive oil penetrate the skin faster, removing dead skin and allowing more moisture to be absorbed.

“The traditional use for olive oil is cooking, however, people have been using it as a skin product for years,” Sexenian said. “Ancient Romans used Italian olive oil to cleanse the pores and hydrate the skin. Using olive oil on nails and cuticles can help eliminate cracks and scaly skin, so there’s no reason why people can’t practice this method now. Olive oil is a miracle substance that can benefit your entire body.”

Sexenian also suggested using olive oil to moisturize hair. “In the winter our hair gets brittle and our scalps dry out,” she said. “Sometimes this can cause dandruff or cause hair to break. Olive oil is a great way to combat hair loss, split ends and dryness. All you have to do is rub a bit in your hair and let the oil do the work. It will eliminate frizz, repair strands and add shine to your hair. ”

If you’re looking for an all-natural solution to dry skin and hair, Sexenian said olive oil is the best way to go. “If you have olive oil in your house, there’s no need to buy fancy moisturizers,” she said. “You should be pleased with the results.”
