The Governors Highway Safety Association, or the GHSA, has recently released its annual report regarding highway safety across the United States focusing on teen fatalities, and the report stated that Tennessee was tied for the highest number of fatalities in the United States during 2012. The Tennessee car accident lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates, whose web site URL can be found at http://www.poncelaw.com, would like to help bring awareness to this problem by alerting the public to this data.

According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, approximately 70,000 Tennessee car accidents occur every year. These accidents lead to approximately 50,000 injuries and to more than 1,000 fatalities. The Tennessee car accident lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates represent clients who have been wrongfully injured by negligent drivers in crashes. The firm would like to alert the public to a report that was recently released that detailed the number of fatalities suffered by teen drivers across the state during the calendar year of 2012.

The report was issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association, or the GHSA. This report reviewed several different statistics regarding highway safety in the United States, and one of the pieces of data that was gathered involved the number of fatalities suffered by drivers who were either 16 or 17 years old during 2012.

Unfortunately, Tennessee was tied with Indiana in having the highest number of fatalities involving drivers of that age during 2012, with 16 recorded deaths on the roads in the state. The report also indicated that teen driver fatalities were up by a factor of approximately 19 percent across the United States. This data indicates that this would be the second consecutive year that teen driving fatalities have risen.

The summary of the report stated that the potential causes for this increase in the number of teen driving fatalities could include the upturn in the economy that is leading to more people overall being on the roads at any given time as well as the fact that fewer states have been strengthening their Graduated Driver Licensing systems.

The Tennessee auto accident lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates would like all motorists in the state to be aware of this troubling statistic, most importantly the parents of drivers who are of this age. The firm would also like to urge any drivers of this age to exercise extreme caution when they are on the roads in the state.
