Mission Tracker has announced that they will be creating new LDS mission maps every week to keep up with the demand that has been created by the lowered service ages for missionaries. In October 2012, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints announced that young men may begin service at age 18 instead of 19 and young women at the age of 19 rather than 21. With the announcement by the LDS Church of 58 new missions that are being created, many more new maps will be needed and some of the existing ones will need to have the mission boundaries updated.
The LDS Church announcement included information that the new missions will be created from existing missions, so both the old missions in the area as well as the new missions will have new mission boundaries in place. Mission Tracker creates full-color topographical maps for each individual LDS mission. To date, over 175 distinct mission maps have been created, but with the latest announcement from the LDS Church, the total number of missions will rise to 405, which means that there will need to be quite a few new maps.
When an LDS missionary receives his or her mission call, the document contains a black and white map of the mission with the service area shaded in gray. Many missionary moms like the idea of a full-color map that they can use to keep track of their missionaries while they are gone. However, finding such a map that actually shows the mission boundaries can be difficult. Mission Tracker utilizes a professional map-making software program to zoom in on the mission area and then uses additional software to hand draw the approximate boundaries using an official mission map as a guide. The name of the mission is included on the map, and the main city as well as the state or country is highlighted.
Because of an additional announcement by the LDS Church listing the new mission presidents for the new missions who will begin their service in July, Mission Tracker expects to only have a short time before the new boundaries are made public. Currently, in addition to the maps that have already been created, they will create any current mission map upon request.
