Recent events, including the UK's horsemeat scandal and Boeing's Dreamliner battery problems, have brought the need to micromanage supplier relations into sharp focus.

Supermarkets have seen a drop in meat sales, and Boeing has had to ground planes across the world because of supplier issues.
