We’re well-acquainted with the transformative effect that outdoor experiences have on young people, and it’s important to us that future generations are encouraged to explore the world around them.

In conjunction with Marmot Clothing and Equipment, Rock/Creek is proud to announce the #MarmotForLife $2,000 giveaway. Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to nominate their “outdoor hero,” the person who initially inspired them to enjoy the great outdoors. One lucky winner will win $1,000 in gear, and another $1,000 in gear for their nominee!

Rock/Creek hopes this prize will stimulate everyone to think about the origins of their own passion, and the people who guided and inspired them along the way. Rock/Creek Marketing Director Mark McKnight explains the motivation for the promotion: "As outdoor enthusiasts, it is our responsibility to help motivate the next generation to get outside; with youth participation in outdoor activities dwindling, this action is needed more than ever. We hope that by inviting our customers to take a second to reflect on their mentors, they will be inspired to get out and mentor others."

The Outdoor Foundation’s Special Report on Youth describes the problem that inspired this prize:

“Today's young hikers, campers, climbers and paddlers are tomorrow's adult outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists, but sadly fewer and fewer youth are heading outdoors each year. In recent decades — amidst changing technological and social landscapes — the American childhood has rapidly moved indoors, leading to epidemic levels of childhood obesity and inactivity.

“The United States is now facing an unprecedented public health and conservation problem. Reconnecting youth with the outdoors has become critical to the health of future generations and the health of our natural landscapes. Our children are desperate for the physical, mental and social benefits of a healthy, active outdoor lifestyle, and our natural landscapes need the support and protection of individuals with a strong connection to the outdoors.

“Parents, friends and family introduce the most youth to the outdoors.”

Notably, outdoor sports require knowledge, much of which is handed down from those who went out on adventures before us. By reflecting upon those who shared their stories and helped us find inspiration, Rock/Creek's leaders anticipate that this contest will support the continued passage of knowledge from enthusiast to enthusiast.

“Our background is in outdoor education and guiding, and Marmot gear stems from the same heritage,” explains Rock/Creek co-owner Dawson Wheeler. “We’re well-acquainted with the transformative effect that outdoor experiences have on young people, and it’s important to us that future generations are encouraged to explore the world around them.”

The $2,000 prize of gear and/or clothing will empower the winners to remain safe and comfortable during their outdoor pursuits. The company began as a club of outdoor enthusiasts, began making down jackets and down sleeping bags in 1974.
