As the game file type varies in contents according to the specific application that created the file, Avanquest recently published the recommendations on the main types of software to open PCF, PLF, and PLN files.

File extension PCF is a game file type which is created by Valve Source. PCF files are defined as a Valve Particle System file which is used with the Valve Source game engine. Valve Source provides a way to make first-person games using particles such as fire, smoke, and other elements which can be edited and modified using the Valve Source development suite of applications.

Valve Source: Valve Software Valve Source is a game engine which provides a comprehensive game development environment and will open PCF files. The Valve Source game engine is available in a paid version on the relevant website and is designed for use with the Windows operating system.
