In an effort to raise awareness of the FDA recall of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, the offices of d’Oliveira & Associates have issued a new infographic illustrating the potential dangers posed by these two products. GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are kidney dialysis products manufactured by Fresenius. Fresenius is one of the largest providers of kidney dialysis treatment and products with over 2,700 clinics worldwide that perform 32 million dialysis treatments every year (Fresenius 2011 Annual Report).

GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are kidney dialysis products that raise bicarbonate levels more effectively than other products. Bicarbonate neutralizes the acid that builds up in the blood. However, these GranuFlo and NaturaLyte may raise the bicarbonate in the bloodstream to unsafe levels, which can cause heart problems. In fact, Fresenius issued an internal memo warning its doctors and dialysis service providers that, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, had been linked to 941 cases of cardiac arrest and death in 2010*. Fresenius Medical Care waited until March 2012 to warn other doctors and dialysis service providers who might be using the products of their dangers**. The FDA received a copy of this internal memo from an anonymous source and quickly issued a recall for the Fresenius products on March 29, 2012***.

The new infographic illustrates the timeline of events leading up to the recall as well as listing potential GranuFlo and NaturaLyte side effects. These side effects may include serious heart problems such as arrhythmia, heart attack, or cardiac arrest. This means Fresenius’ products have an increased chance of risk to kidney dialysis patients because heart problems are the number one cause of death among this group*. Additionally, Fresenius estimated in its internal memo that GranuFlo and NaturaLyte make it six times more likely that a kidney dialysis patient will experience heart problems**.
