Footlights Publishing, Inc., a leading integrated media publisher for the theatre industry, has completed its acquisition of Bitter-Lemons.com, a Los Angeles-based company devoted to aggregating theatre reviews, information and news about Los Angeles theatre.

As a FootLights Publishing subsidiary, Bitter-Lemons will bring a dedicated and ever-growing readership over to FootLights at a time when the publisher is beefing up its online offering via a newly designed website, http://www.gofootlights.com. Bitter-Lemons will bring consistent content to both FootLights Publishing’s print and online properties.

“The Bitter-Lemons acquisition will enhance FootLight’s online presence and our mission to reach larger numbers of performing arts audiences in Los Angeles and San Francisco,” says Peter Finlayson, CEO and publisher of FootLights Publishing, Inc. “Merging Bitter-Lemons into the FootLights family is a perfect marriage.”

Bitter-Lemons was established in 2009 by Colin Mitchell and Enci Box, two theatre professionals eager to provide theatre audiences with richer information about theatre performances. The online company is known for its Lemon Meter, a ratings system similar to the film site, Rotten Tomatoes, which calculates ratings by aggregating theatre reviews. Bitter-Lemons also is known for counter-intuitive and irreverent content on theatre news.

The Bitter-Lemons acquisition gives FootLights an online reach of 30,000 unique visitors a month. In addition, its print property brings roughly 65,000 readers per month. Mitchell will continue as editor-in-chief of Bitter-Lemons.

For now, Finlayson says FootLights will continue its focus on Los Angeles and San Francisco but the Bitter-Lemons acquisition opens the possibility for expansion into other theatre markets nationwide. Plans for the future are not yet established, but Finlayson says that he hopes to continue with technological enhancements and upgrades, expansion into other markets, a more streamlined and user-friendly site and more and more unique voices.

“We are working on rolling out Bitter-Lemons in the San Francisco Bay Area,” says Finlayson. “After that’s complete and we’ve made technological enhancements, we’ll explore expansion as long as it complements our presence in Los Angeles and the Bay Area and supports our goal to offer a unique voice for theatre and provide theatre audiences quality information that aids them in their buying decisions.”
