Thousands of markers kept out of BC landfills and thousands of dollars saved for a local Vancouver elementary school…all thanks to the generous support of law firm Borden Ladner Gervais.

With a modest purchase of eco-friendly whiteboard markers via EcoSmart Product’s “Make-A-Mark” program, Borden Ladner Gervais saved Vancouver school Lord Roberts Elementary thousands of dollars and will keep hundreds of pounds of waste out of the local landfill.

Due to the refillable feature of the markers, the savings and waste reduction for Lord Roberts Elementary should continue, literally, for years.

Not only do disposable markers clog up landfills all over North America and emit toxins into classrooms, they are a relentless cost for schools, teachers and parents. Vancouver-based EcoSmart Products established its “Make-A-Mark” program to alleviate both the environmental and financial issues. With the help of companies like Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, they are succeeding in doing just that.

EcoSmart Products donates 100% of all “Make-A-Mark” proceeds to the program.

Building upon Borden Ladner Gervais' commitment to corporate social responsibility, the firm saw the opportunity to support a neighbourhood school at the grassroots level.

“At Borden Ladner Gervais LLP we take great pride in the role we play in our communities,” said Geoffrey Thompson, a partner in the Vancouver office of BLG. “Through our community involvement program, BLG is proud to support schools like Lord Roberts Elementary.”

Lord Roberts was thrilled to be offered a marker donation from Borden Ladner Gervais' via the “Make-A-Mark” program.

"The Lord Roberts Elementary Staff is very excited to receive the donation of the EcoSmart markers. Being an environmentally friendly school is important to us and this helps us take a step further in that direction. We are so thankful for generous businesses in our community like the law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP."

"It's a win-win situation," explains Kerry Tuttle, Managing Partner at EcoSmart Products, "one that reduces financial stress on local teachers, parents and schools, while helping companies find a practical way to put their corporate citizenship values into practice."

EcoSmart Products is seeing companies jump at the chance to support local schools in their respective communities. "It's quite a community-building act for a company, like Borden Ladner Gervais, to support education at the classroom level," says Tuttle "Schools are increasingly facing tight budgets and often teachers and parents are paying out of pocket for markers and other school supplies."

EcoSmart Products is excited to be launching several initiatives, in addition to the “Make-A-Mark” program, that will distribute free eco-friendly dry erase and permanent felt tip markers throughout North America and internationally. The recently launched “Green Grad Pack” program and the soon-to-be launched “Save Billions” will create permanent changes in the disposable marker sector.
