Green Apple Flooring Comments On New EU Health And Safety Directives For Chemical Handlers

It’s been announced this week that the European Commission is outlining plans to improve EU workers’ protection against exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances.

“There’s no denying the fact that working in the manufacturing sector poses a demonstrable risk to all employees" - Green Apple representative

The EU is seeking to amend five of the existing Occupational Health and Safety Directives that currently refer to EU chemical classification and labelling legislation.

The European Commission’s proposal, which has been put together with the help of employer and trade union representatives and has been scrutinised by Advisory Committee on Safety and Health at Work (ACSHW), seeks to better inform those who work within the manufacturing and chemical supply industries of the risks associated with handling certain dangerous substances. If passed, the new legislation will improve chemical labelling and hazard classification, which in turn will help employers to put more effective risk management measures in place to protect their employees’ health and safety in the workplace.

The proposal will be put in front of the European parliament and the EU’s Council of Ministers for adoption.

A representative from wooden floor supplier Green Apple Flooring believes that the revisions will be a positive step forward for the manufacturing industry.

“There’s no denying the fact that working in the manufacturing sector poses a demonstrable risk to all employees. Safety laws and guidelines are much more stringent that several decades ago, and rightly so, but we are glad to see that the European Commission is constantly looking at ways to further protect those who handle potentially dangerous chemicals and substances on a day to day basis,” he says.

“From our perspective, those who work in the processing and subsequent treatment of timber are frequently exposed to toxic substances. Even floor installers will commonly use chemically-based products to finish wooden floors. We’re pleased that employees at all stages of our timber supply chain in the European Union will be better protected from harm if the changes are actioned.”

More information on the EC's proposal can be found in this official press release.
