“When Gene and Jim began this adventure 20 years ago, I’m not sure anyone realized how big Field of Screams would become. There has been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears poured into this business..."

Located just a short drive from Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, MD, on an inconspicuous 33-acre vegetable farm in Mountville, PA, lies Field of Screams – one of the most frightening haunted attractions in the country. From humble beginnings, the Schopf Brothers, Gene and Jim, opened their farm for the first Field of Screams Haunted Hayride in 1993.
This year, the annual Field of Screams awards banquet was a bit different as the Field of Screams managers surprised the Schopf Brothers with 20th Anniversary Awards. The awards were fashioned from two Field of Screams skateboard decks painted with “Happy 20th Anniversary”, the dates of operation “1993-2012” and signed by each and every ‘scary’ actor.
From the low-budget, ghostly launch in 1993, Gene and Jim had no idea what an uprising they were creating. By the end of season one, the Haunted Hayride proved itself a success. Each year, the brothers have added more scare, beginning with the terror-filled barn – the Den of Darkness, in 1995. In 2002, The Frightmare Asylum opened its gates to sinister screams of guests and ‘patients’ alike.
“When Gene and Jim began this adventure 20 years ago, I’m not sure anyone realized how big Field of Screams would become. There has been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears poured into this business over the years, and they dedicate themselves to making Field of Screams be America’s #1 Haunted Attraction every day. Their desire, work ethic, and determination have driven them to create one of the largest haunted attractions in the country.” Christine Eshleman, Operations Manager.
For twenty years, the Schopf Brothers and their team of ghoulish actors have terrified their ‘guests’ and sent them screaming into the night at the ever-menacing Field of Screams. Every year, the special effects, lights, sounds and bloodcurdling screams electrify visitors and this 20th year anniversary was no exception as Field of Screams remains one of America’s most startling and sought after haunts.
Don’t let the delectable farm fresh produce of summer, the bright orange pumpkins in the fall, the Christmas Trees of the holiday season or the lovely Easter and Mother’s Day flowers hoodwink you. From September to November, Gene and Jim Schopf set out to frighten and terrify with disturbingly great success as they have for the past 20 years, and they have no plans to cease this horrifying scheme!
Happy 20th Anniversary Field of Screams, and let the scaring continue for years to come for all the thrill-seekers who love to scream.
