A Wallin & Klarich client was recently able to resolve her divorce proceedings and reach a peaceful settlement with her former spouse. The client was represented by Orange County Divorce Lawyer Yvette Ochoa, who is fluent in Spanish. Both the client and her former spouse are Spanish speakers and Ms. Ochoa was able to easily communicate with both parties regarding settlement terms of their Orange County Divorce.
“The fact that English was my second language and that I am a fluent Spanish speaker provides me with the ability to help those who would face great difficulty in the family law courts due to the inability to speak and understand English. Family law matters can be complicated and complex in general, and that fact that a person cannot speak or understand English only furthers the complexity of his or her case. I am here to help,” said Ms. Ochoa.
According to court record from Orange County Superior Court – Lamoreaux Justice Center, the client and her former spouse separated in 2011. After the separation, the client maintained physical custody of her two daughters, but had received no financial support from her former spouse. The client sought out the help of Ms. Ochoa and expressed her desire to gain child support in Orange County and change her married last name, while quickly resolving the case so she could move forward with her life.
The client and her former spouse had informally agreed about the terms of the divorce, but once the client retained the assistance of Ms. Ochoa and formal settlement agreements started, the client’s former spouse would not respond to any calls or letters from the client or Ms. Ochoa, according to court documents. After the client’s former spouse had proven to be unwilling to discuss settlement terms, Ms. Ochoa went to the court and requested a Mandatory Settlement Conference. She also filed a Request for Order for child support to ensure that the client’s financial needs would be met if no settlement was reached.
On the day of the hearing for the Request for Order for child support, Ms. Ochoa was able to negotiate with the client’s former spouse regarding divorce settlement terms. The client’s former spouse represented himself in the court proceedings and was a Spanish speaker, but Ms. Ochoa was able to successfully communicate with him due to her Spanish fluency. Ms. Ochoa talked with the client’s former spouse and resolved each divorce term that was at issue. As a result, the Mandatory Settlement Conference was moved up. Three weeks later a formal judgment was entered and both the client and her former spouse were restored to single persons. The client not only gained the result she was looking for, but the divorce proceedings moved even quicker than expected due to Ms. Ochoa’s ability to speak Spanish and clearly communicate with both parties.
